We all know the feeling: you open Instagram to check one thing, and all of a sudden it’s been thirty minutes and you’ve somehow cycled through Snapchat, TikTok, and back to Instagram again. It’s so common that we have a word for it: Doomscrolling. For a long time, perhaps as long as I’ve owned a handheld device, I’ve struggled with how often I’m on my phone, especially when I need to be focused on studying, sleeping, or just being present in real life. When looking for solutions, I wasn’t trying to quit social media altogether; I just wanted to break the habit loop and be more intentional with my time.

That’s when I discovered Opal, an app that helps you manage screen time by blocking certain apps on your phone. What I love about it is that it’s not about deleting anything or completely locking your device, it’s about giving yourself just enough friction to pause and reconsider.

I set Opal to block all social media from midnight to 7 a.m., so I’m not tempted to scroll when I should be sleeping. I also use it in shorter blocks during the day, especially when I’m studying. Once I start a session, the app completely prevents me from opening Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok, even when I tap on the icons out of habit. That small barrier is surprisingly powerful. It has taught me that so much of the time I spend on social media isn’t about interacting with people or content, but rather as a mindless pastime. I am working to prioritize mindful pastimes: painting, reading, yoga, etc.

When using Opal, after you try to leave a focus session (their term for a set period of blocking apps) or take a break, the app makes you wait 15 seconds and prompts you to take a deep breath. It sounds simple, but that moment of mindfulness is often just what I need to reset and stay committed to my goal. Even though I don’t pay for the premium version (which has stricter lock-ins), I still find the free version incredibly helpful.

Using Opal has changed the way I interact with my phone. I still enjoy social media, but I’m no longer stuck in the endless scrolling cycle. I’ve learned to set boundaries that support my priorities, whether it’s finishing an assignment, getting better sleep, or just taking time for myself offline. If you’re someone who feels like your screen time is getting in the way of the things you care about, I highly recommend giving an app like Opal a try. It’s not about fully unplugging; it’s about finding a balance that works for you.
