College Board is launching an exciting new initiative aimed at preparing high school students for careers in cybersecurity. The AP Career Kickstart™ Cybersecurity pilot program is a two-course pathway emphasizing professional experience and skill in the technological field. These courses allow students to receive college credit for their hard work.

What Is AP Career Kickstart?

AP Career Kickstart is an opportunity that combines the academic challenge of Advanced Placement (AP) classes with hands-on career and technical education (CTE). Its goal is to help students build the skills required for in-demand industries, beginning with a focus on cybersecurity. The program includes in-depth teacher training, support networks for educators, and rigorous assessments to help students succeed in both higher education and the workforce.

The Cybersecurity Pathway consists of two full-year courses:

  • AP Cyber: Networking: This course covers networking fundamentals, including network hardware, protocols, and security practices. It’s equivalent to a college-level Introduction to Networking course.
  • AP Cyber: Security: This course delves into cybersecurity principles, such as threat analysis, risk management, and security controls. It’s equivalent to a college-level Introduction to Cybersecurity course.

Students who perform well on the pilot exams may receive vouchers for additional test preparation and the opportunity to take industry-recognized CompTIA certification exams at no cost. Following the completion of both Cyber courses, students have the opportunity to participate in a local internship or apprenticeship to solidify their skills.

Benefits for Students and Educators

Students will gain hands-on experience in cybersecurity, preparing them for higher education or immediate entry into the workforce. Educators receive comprehensive support, including training, instructional resources, and access to a professional learning community.

While applications for the 2025-26 pilot are closed, interested schools can join in on the national launch in the 2026-27 school year. More details will become available in August 2025.
